Programme Overview

This Performance Sprint teaches participants to organise, delegate and steer a team or a business based in Africa from abroad, taking into account the economic, human, cultural and social realities of the country of operation. Each of the six modules ends with a practical application on the participant's own organisation, so that every deliverable can be used immediately. Situations are analysed in their context: practices vary from one country, one company and one person to another.

Curriculum

01Structure an organisation that works from a distance
  • Clarify roles, define responsibilities and choose a competent local relay.
  • Understand how family ties, seniority and social status shape real authority within the company.
  • Practical application: build an organisation chart and a responsibility matrix.
02Delegate and empower teams
  • Set precise objectives, define decision-making powers and develop autonomy.
  • Identify situations where respect for hierarchy, fear of displeasing or personal loyalties hold back initiative and the reporting of difficulties.
  • Practical application: formalise a delegation with objectives, means, limits and follow-up points.
03Communicate and maintain trust
  • Set up useful meetings and choose tools suited to connectivity constraints and time zones.
  • Prevent misunderstandings linked to the unspoken, to the ways disagreement is expressed and to expectations placed on a leader based abroad.
  • Practical application: draw up a communication charter and a weekly meeting template.
04Steer the business and build a results culture
  • Track sales, expenses, cash, lead times and customer satisfaction.
  • Clarify expectations on punctuality, quality and keeping commitments; tell real constraints, skill gaps and behavioural problems apart.
  • Practical application: create a dashboard and a procedure for handling variances.
05Secure operations and financial flows
  • Organise approvals, document transactions and put proportionate controls in place.
  • Handle family and community requests, requests for exceptions and conflicts of interest with explicit, fair rules.
  • Practical application: define authorisation thresholds, required supporting documents and rules for exceptional expenses.
06Manage difficulties and support change
  • Spot warning signals, handle conflicts and decide when to step in on site.
  • Give demanding feedback without humiliating, manage resistance and draw on solidarity and belonging to serve collective performance.
  • Practical application: prepare a corrective meeting and an improvement plan.
